M23 rebels have taken over Heineken’s depots in eastern DRC

Date: Jun 21, 2025

M23 rebel forces have raided and taken over Dutch brewer Heineken’s depots in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after attacks between the army and rebels.

The brewer has since announced the withdrawal of their employees from facilities in the conflict-affected areas.

The beer maker says its facilities in Bukavu and Goma are now under rebel control. Heineken’s Congo unit, Bralima, continues to operate in parts of the country not affected by the conflict.

“Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our employees. We have withdrawn all remaining staff from these sites and continue to support them financially,”  it said in a statement on Friday.

Heineken continues to say that the conditions required to operate responsibly and safely are no longer present. ” As a result, as of 12th June, we’ve  lost operational control.”
