Zimbabwe marks 45 years of independence

Date: Apr 18, 2025

Zimbabweans both at home and abroad are coming together to celebrate a monumental moment in the nation's history, the 45th anniversary of its independence.

On this day, April 18, Zimbabwe commemorates the end of British colonial rule and the dawn of a new era for the country.

The turning point came on April 18, 1980, when the nation, then known as Rhodesia, achieved full sovereignty after decades of colonial domination. The historic liberation struggle, led by the people of Zimbabwe, brought an end to centuries of oppression, paving the way for the birth of an independent Zimbabwe.

In a statement reflecting on this significant occasion, Zimbabwe’s Government Spokesperson, Nick Mangwana, shared his thoughts on the national celebrations taking place throughout the country. He emphasised the importance of the 45th anniversary, noting it as a time to reflect on the country’s journey to freedom and self-determination.

“This is more than just a celebration of independence,” Mangwana said. “It’s a tribute to the resilience and determination of our people who fought for the rights we now enjoy. As a nation, we are proud of how far we’ve come and are excited about the future.”

Across Zimbabwe, the anniversary is marked by a range of events, including cultural performances, national speeches, and public celebrations. The day is not just a reminder of the struggles that led to independence but also a time for Zimbabweans to celebrate their shared identity and achievements.

For Zimbabweans in the diaspora, the day carries special significance as they reflect on the values that continue to define the country, such as unity, sovereignty, and the pursuit of progress. Despite the challenges of the past, there is a renewed sense of hope as the country looks to a future of growth and prosperity.
