International Day of zero tolerance for FGM 2025 strengthens alliances to end harmful practice

Date: Feb 5, 2025

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) will be observed on February 6,2025.

This marks a critical moment to raise awareness and reflect on the progress made in the global fight against this harmful and dangerous practice.

This annual observance encourages communities, health workers, and families to engage in efforts to eradicate FGM, which affects millions of girls and women worldwide.

This year’s theme, "Step up the Pace," calls for intensified action and highlights the need to strengthen alliances and foster collaborative movements to end FGM. The goal is to further empower communities to take a stand and accelerate efforts towards ending this violation of human rights.

In line with this year’s theme, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will participate in a global advocacy webinar at 15H00 CAT on February 6. The event, titled "Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM," will be hosted by the United Nations Population Fund and United Nations Children's Fund Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. It will bring together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss strategies, share best practices, and reinforce commitments to ending FGM.

As we observe this important day, it is essential that governments, civil society, and individuals continue to collaborate and take decisive action to ensure that every girl and woman is protected from the lifelong harm caused by FGM.
