SA to substantiate ICJ case against Israel: Minister

Date: Oct 28, 2024

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola says South Africa is this afternoon submitting a detailed memorial against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The action aims to substantiate its case that Israel is committing genocide in Palestine.

South Africa filed the genocide case against Israel at the tribunal in The Hague late last year saying Israel, which has bombed Gaza since last October, failed to uphold its commitments under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Lamola says an announcement will be made once submitted.

“And once is done we will make the announcement. It does detail forensic and comprehensive detail and evidence that proves that indeed that the State of Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, Lamola says the foreign policy of the country will never change. He says South Africa is committed in ensuring there’s global peace by advocating for dialogue where there are conflicts.

The Presidency and the Democratic Alliance have recently been at loggerheads on the country’s foreign policy.

Lamola says people should not jump the gun.

” There is no question that the executive authority of the State is vested with the President including his supreme diplomat of the country the custodian of our foreign policy. We also facilitate and coordinate in terms of foreign service act is DIRCO that coordinates and handle all issues related to our foreign policy. Our colleagues should not jump the gun they should allow the processes to be concluded.”
