This causes high and low tides, increasing the risk of stronger-than-usual rip tides.
Lifesaving SA President, Dhaya Sewduth says onshore winds brought in lots of bluebottles over Christmas in Durban.
He says these conditions are expected to change tomorrow which will make for a more pleasant beach experience.
NSRI Spokesperson, Andrew Ingram says the springtide could be especially strong on New Year’s Day.
“Expect higher high tides, lower low tides and stronger rip currents for several days around 31 December, particularly on New Year's Day January 1,2025, a traditional beach day. Swimmers are urged to visit lifeguard protected beaches, and anglers and hikers should exercise caution, especially during the incoming tide. Follow tide schedules, stay informed with local weather updates from the South African Weather Service, and always prioritise safety,” says Ingram.
