SA’s Eastern Cape province holds day of mourning for flood victims

Date: Jun 19, 2025

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government in South Africa (SA) is observing a day of mourning today to honour the 90 people who lost their lives during the devastating floods that recently hit the province.

The floods, which severely affected several areas, particularly Mthatha, have caused widespread destruction and displacement.

A memorial service is being held at the King Sabata Dalindyebo College in Mthatha, where families, government officials, and community members are expected to pay their respects.

The floods have left thousands homeless, with several people still unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continue. SA government, through various provincial and national departments, has been visiting affected communities to offer emergency aid and support to those impacted.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue assisting with relief efforts as the province works towards recovery.
