Africa should never allow itself to be invaded: Former SA President

Date: May 23, 2025

Former South African (SA) President, Thabo Mbeki says the African continent must never again allow a situation where an African country is invaded

He was speaking ahead of the Thabo Mbeki annual lecture in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Mbeki says the three African countries, SA, Nigeria and Gabon, which were then members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, voted for a UN resolution which led to the killing of Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi. Mbeki says that should not have been done.

“When the Security Council met to discuss the resolution on Libya. The South African Ambassador was a temporary member of the Security Council at the time. He ran away and tried to hide somewhere because his instruction from his boss in SA had been to vote in favour of the resolution. So he went and hid himself somewhere and the US ambassador at the Security Council looked for him, they found him and they took him physically into the UN Chamber so that he must vote for this resolution which he did to destroy Libya,” Mbeki said.
