‘SA authorities misled US counterparts in extradition of $14 million fraud accused’

Date: May 26, 2025

Closing arguments were expected on Monday in the trial of those accused of corruption in the $14 million asbestos removal case in South Africa (SA)

The case is being heard at the High Court in the city of Bloemfontein, in the Free State province. Loyiso Makapela, who is the legal representative for accused 17, Moroadi Cholota, earlier indicated that they would not be calling any witnesses as they believe the state failed to advance a convincing case SA courts have jurisdiction to try Cholota.

Cholota is challenging her extradition process from the United States (US) Cholota is adamant that her extradition from America was unlawful and that SA authorities misled their counterparts in the US to bring her back. The presiding Judge on the matter, Justice Phillip Loubser allowed the adjournment.

“The reason for the standing down is to allow the state as well as the legal representatives of accused number 17, to prepare heads of argument and to present closing arguments in the trial within a trial on that day the court will now adjourn,” Loubser.
