SA Security Expert urges President to act swiftly on police allegations

Date: Jul 11, 2025

Institute for Security Studies' Training Co-ordinator, Willem Els in South Africa (SA), has reiterated the view that President Cyril Ramaphosa needs to act swiftly.

This follows the allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

During a media briefing on Sunday, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of being in constant contact with individuals linked to criminal activities. He also accused some senior police officials of being involved in corruption. The Presidency has confirmed that Ramaphosa will on Sunday night address the nation.

“You know, Ramaphosa almost dragged his feet to deal with a situation of this magnitude. This is very different from many of the previous ones that have been dealt with by the ruling party,” said Els.

“And if they’re going to deal with that in a similar fashion, as they dealt with the others like for instance the State Capture in the Zondo Commission they were selective in their evidence. But also, very selective in adhering to any of the recommendations. So, what we need now, we need swift justice. We need swift action.”
