Although Mnangagwa last year openly declined a request by his party ZANU PF to extend his time in office, some still believe he is spearheading the agenda behind the scenes.
Mnangagwa says the opposition parties plays a critical role in his country.
“It is critically important that we must have an opposition that will check on the ruling party. So, members of the opposition make sure you deal with the ruling party. Don’t make them sit, make sure you make them busy.”
The interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change in Zimbabwe Sengezo Tshabangu has been criticised for supporting Mnangagwa’s bid for a third term as President.
Some analysts have described the call as irresponsible and lacking an understanding of the role of the opposition. The party and lawmakers have endorsed Mnangagwa.
Tshabangu says political leaders in Zimbabwe can live together regardless of their differences.
“We have seen in nations like South Africa, Malema will oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa and they will go and wine and drink, they will go and jog in the morning. that’s the culture we want to see.”
