Zambia prepares for repatriation, state funeral of former President Lungu

Date: Jun 18, 2025

The body of Zambia’s sixth President, Edgar Lungu, is expected to arrive in Lusaka this morning after he passed away earlier this month while receiving medical treatment in South Africa (SA).

Lungu’s repatriation will take place at Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg, where officials from both countries are expected to gather for a solemn handover. SA’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined a host of African leaders in paying tribute, describing Lungu’s passing as a great loss to the continent.

In Zambia, the government has extended the national mourning period through to next week. Preparations are underway for a state funeral to be held on Sunday, where citizens and dignitaries will gather to honour the late statesman.

Lungu, who served as president from 2015 to 2021, was remembered for his role in championing regional unity and expanding Zambia’s infrastructure. His family, together with the government, have agreed on a programme to ensure he receives a dignified farewell.
