Sudan conflict has triggered unprecedented humanitarian crisis: Former Prime Minister

Date: Jun 25, 2025

Sudan's former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has described the ongoing conflict in the country as an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, with over 100 000 people reported killed since fighting broke out in April last year.

Hamdok, speaking this week in South Africa, painted a grim picture of the war’s toll on civilians, saying the scale of human suffering is unmatched in the country's modern history. He called for urgent and comprehensive international assistance to help address the crisis.

“Our expectations from our friends are assistance at all levels, leadership, the public and the continent, to help us address this crisis,” Hamdok said.

He also expressed gratitude to the many countries across Africa and beyond that have opened their borders to Sudanese refugees fleeing the violence.

“I must commend many countries in the continent and even beyond, who generously received our people as refugees in many places,” he added.
