Anticipation builds for Ramaphosa-Trump bilateral talks in Washington

Date: May 21, 2025

As dawn breaks over the United States (US) capital, final preparations are underway for a pivotal bilateral meeting between South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa and US President Donald Trump.

The high-stakes engagement is expected to shape the trajectory of economic and geopolitical relations between the two nations.

Wednesday’s damp weather sets a reflective tone for the SA delegation, who, after enjoying two days of clear spring skies, might see the rainfall as an auspicious sign.

As the African proverb reminds us, the rain beats the leopard skin, but it does not wash out the spots, a sentiment fitting for the weighty issues that will be discussed.

The agenda is packed with substantive matters, ranging from economic cooperation to geopolitical tensions. The meeting schedule, as outlined by the White House, will begin with a public welcome at the door, followed by a closed luncheon and culminating in a grand media spectacle in the Oval Office. Journalists, analysts, and policymakers worldwide will be watching intently as the two leaders navigate their diplomatic encounter.

The talks come at a critical juncture, with lingering misconceptions and competing national interests framing discussions. Observers expect the event to be as much about the performances of the two heads of state as it is about policy, every nod, frown, and gesture will be scrutinised, amplified, and dissected in real time.
