Poachers killed at Kruger National Park

Date: Jun 20, 2024

Three suspected rhino poachers have been killed at South Africa’s (SA) Kruger National Park, in two separate incidents, the Park’s management says.

The two incidents took place within four days of each other, reflecting the severity of the danger the park’s rangers continuously work under. “On Friday, June 14, 2024 just before dark, rangers made contact with a group of suspected rhino poachers who were armed with a high calibre rifle, an axe and other poaching equipment.

“One of the suspects was fatally wounded on contact while the others escaped. A rifle and ammunition were recovered at the scene,” the South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement.

Four days later on June 18, rangers once again quelled a second attack, when rangers encountered an armed group of suspected rhino poachers. “During the contact, two of the suspects were fatally wounded and a heavy calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and other poaching equipment were seized. Both incidents are currently being investigated by the South African Police Service.”

Poachers deal with incursions on the eastern boundary are still relentless and the anti-poaching units have been under a lot of pressure, the park management say.

SANParks says it is also exploring numerous interventions, which include community mobilisation and support to push back against the continuous poaching threats.
