The official was shot dead inside a stationary vehicle outside the institution’s Nelson Mandela Drive Campus in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province, last night.  

It is reported that the WSU Senior official was ambushed on the road leading to his eNkulekweni residence. 

Police are investigating a case of murder and the motive of the killing is unknown at this stage. 

Ngcukayitobi says: "The council is deeply shocked and disturbed at what appears to be a brazen act of assassination. We send deep condolences to his family at this stage to the family and his extended family. We have escalated the incident to the law enforcement authorities. We are hopeful that they will work swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice without delay." 

In recent months, the university has been facing unrest raging from student protest, to legal battles, intervention from other stakeholders trying to reach an agreement between students and the management of the university.
