Over 450 000 displaced in DRC as humanitarian crisis deepens

Date: Feb 18, 2025

More than 450 000 people have been left without shelter, food, or water in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the destruction of 13 displacement sites in Goma.

The catastrophic events have worsened the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

The devastating collapse of Bukavu has also contributed to the ongoing crisis, further escalating the challenges faced by those affected. According to Oxfam, the situation is dire, with vulnerable communities enduring extreme conditions.

Dr Manenji Mangundu, Oxfam’s Country Director in the DRC, described the situation as deeply troubling. "Thousands of people have been left without basic necessities, and the destruction of displacement sites in Goma has made an already fragile situation even worse," he stated. "Our teams on the ground are doing everything they can, but the scale of the crisis requires urgent international support."

With the loss of essential resources, displaced families are facing unimaginable hardships. As the crisis unfolds, the international community is being called upon to provide immediate relief to prevent further suffering and address the deepening needs of those affected.
