Matlala, who remains in custody at the high-security Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison, was arrested following a violent attack allegedly linked to a domestic dispute. According to investigators, his former partner was travelling with a friend and a driver when unknown gunmen opened fire on their vehicle. Although she escaped unharmed, her friend sustained injuries in the attack.
The case has drawn intense public scrutiny, particularly after explosive claims made by the KwaZulu-Natal province's Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Speaking at a recent media briefing, Mkhwanazi alleged that Matlala had strong connections with senior police officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. The Minister has since denied having any relationship with Matlala or involvement in a controversial police medical services tender reportedly linked to the accused.
