Questions raised over SA province’s failed $55 million township Renewal Project

Date: Jun 18, 2025

The office of South Africa’s (SA) Public Protector has urged the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in the Gauteng province to hold the provincial executive accountable, for failing to implement unresolved remedial actions

The recommendations stem from various investigations, including a failed $55 million Renewal Project for the township of Alexandra, in the city Johannesburg.

A 2021 joint investigation with the SA Human Rights Commission found poor service delivery, maladministration and human rights violations were committed by the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng government.

The Public Protector's Provincial Representative, Vusumuzi Dlamini says the committee’s intervention is crucial.
“We did not get any confirmation or commitment from the office of the Premier (of Gauteng) with regard to whether this request has been made to SA President, Cyril Ramaphosa, for a proclamation for the Special Investigating Unit to undertake an investigation in the Alexandra Renewal Project,” Dlamini said.
