No violent incidents in SA’s Cape Town following taxi strike

Date: Aug 9, 2023

There has been no incidents of public violence reported in South Africa’s (SA) Cape Town overnight or early Wednesday morning.

There have also been no reports of obstructions to traffic or unrest on the city's roads. Cape Town has seen a wave of public violence incidents over the last week in the wake of the ongoing SA National Taxi Council (SANTACO) taxi strike.

At least five people have been killed in suspected taxi-strike related incidents in Cape Town since last Thursday. More than 120 incidents have been reported.

Meanwhile, SANTACO says it will meet with the Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga this Wednesday to discuss the ongoing taxi strike in the Western Cape.

Chikunga has blamed the City for the protracted taxi strike in the Western Cape, and ordered the city to release all impounded taxis. Over 6000 minibus taxis have been impounded for various infringements.

The taxi umbrella body has indicated that the province-wide strike will end Wednesday.

The Police Minister Bheki Cele says there has been an upsurge in serious crime in the province as police have had to deviate their crime prevention operations to help quell the violence.
