SA Electoral Commission drives youth voter registration

Date: Mar 17, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Electoral Commission (IEC) has intensified its efforts to encourage youth participation in future elections.

This week, the commission is focusing its campaign on Amalia, a remote area near Schweizer-Reneke in the North West Province, targeting Grade 11 and 12 learners at Obang Secondary School.

The initiative aims to urge young people to register to vote, addressing gaps in youth engagement and aspirations. Dr Tumelontle Thiba, the IEC’s Provincial Spokesperson, highlighted the importance of this outreach, “We realised there were gaps in young people’s aspirations and needs that we could easily address. One of the issues that deeply moved us and prompted our return to this school was discovering that some Grade 12 learners had not applied for admission to tertiary institutions. This could potentially jeopardise their future, as they might miss the opportunity to pursue post-school education in any form. We also learned that there were more than 25 matric graduates who could be admitted to universities.”
