The council is the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation in the US. In a hard-hitting statement, it says supremacists who are opposed to efforts to return farmland in SA to the indigenous community also favour Trump's move.
The group’s Executive Director Nihad Awad said that if Trump wanted to cut off US funding to a racist foreign government that was actively stealing land from its owner, then he should start with the Israeli Government and its ongoing campaign of dispossession in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as Lebanon and Syria.
Nawad also said that targeting SA represented obvious retaliation for the genocide charges that Pretoria filed against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as well as a favour to white supremacists who long for the days of apartheid rule and oppose any effort to return stolen land to the black community.
Last year the Council welcomed a detailed submission by South Africa to the ICJ outlining evidence of Israel's alleged violation of the Genocide Convention in Gaza.
