Mchunu addressed Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee, where he led a police delegation to provide an update on the matter. He responded to criticism from Members of Parliament who said the investigation only began after the case gained traction on social media.
“It is not true that SAPS waited until there was this kind of activism. While we welcome it, I don’t think we should avoid facts,”said Mchunu. “The investigation started soon after it was reported. It’s a fact that it was not started because of public activism , it started before.”
