Amid allegations of political persecution by the current President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, which have caused divisions among the SADC Heads of State, Khama has been living outside the country for two years due to safety concerns.
Khama has stated his intention to return home in time for the forthcoming elections. The current government, led by President Masisi, seeks him on charges of illegal possession of firearms and other criminal allegations, which are believed to be politically motivated.
However, sources close to several SADC Heads of State who are sympathetic to Khama have indicated that Masisi has received warnings against engaging in 'dirty politics' and has been advised to permit Khama's return, as his arrest could potentially lead to unrest in Botswana.
Although labelled a fugitive within Botswana, Khama has garnered support from King Mswati of eSwatini and Angolan President João Lourenço. Moreover, President Khama has continued to travel freely to various countries in Europe and the SADC region.
