The union is now calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently step in, warning that the claims have far-reaching implications for national security and the integrity of the justice system.
Mkhwanazi has accused Mchunu of interfering in high-profile investigations and alleged that the minister has connections to criminal syndicates operating in the country.
The accusations have sent shockwaves through the policing sector and broader public, prompting SAPU to urge a measured yet firm response from the Presidency.
SAPU National Spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said the situation must be handled with the utmost sensitivity due to the serious nature of the claims.
“Such allegations or such issues, they don’t get to be publicised through the media or even for public consumption. The intervention of the President in this regard is critical,” said Thobakgale.
He added that the allegations extend beyond just political interference, implicating the Executive, the Deputy National Commissioner, and elements of the justice system.
“These are issues that have something to do with the integrity and the national security of the country. So they need to be treated with sensitivity,” he said.
