CONTRALESA President Kgosi Mathupa Mokoena highlighted the dire consequences of the political situation on the economies of both South Africa and Mozambique, as well as the threat to people's lives due to the continuing unrest over disputed election results.
"Contralesa is seriously concerned about the situation in Mozambique. We have lost many lives there and the economy of Mozambique and South Africa is severely affected. Contralesa calls upon SADC to rise above partisanship, and friendship and honestly intervene. Contralesa once more calls upon liberation movements and all organisations, especially in SADC and in Africa, to accept the will of the people. We do not have what we used to call loyal voters. Voters are now voting based on performance, not on loyalty. This situation in Mozambique needs honest, courageous leaders to confront this situation seriously," Mokoena said.
The call for intervention comes as violent protests continue to erupt in Mozambique following the top court's decision to uphold the results of the disputed October presidential elections. The unrest has led to significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure, further exacerbating the economic and social challenges faced by the country.
