President highlights importance of honouring SA freedom fighters

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says government must be unashamedly honour those who sacrificed their lives for SA's freedom.

This after former African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Duma Nokwe's remains were reburied on the weekend.

Nokwe is amongst the 42 former freedom fighters who died in exile and whose remains were repatriated from Zambia and Zimbabwe September 2024.

Ramaphosa says his administration is committed to restoring the dignity of activists who died and were buried abroad.

Ramaphosa's statement is contained in his weekly letter to the nation.

Ramaphosa says government is contending with the SA's past in the interests of social cohesion and nation-building.

He says they have advanced policies of restitution and redress to acknowledge and correct the historical injustice of apartheid.
