Operation to rescue illegal miners enters second phase in SA

Date: Nov 22, 2024

In a concerted effort to address the ongoing crisis at the Stilfontein mine, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Defence Force are poised to initiate the second phase of a critical operation on Friday.

The focus of this phase is to accurately ascertain the number of illegal miners trapped within shaft 11 of the mine located in the North West province. The operation's strategic plan includes the safe extraction of these miners, scheduled to commence on Monday.

The urgency of the situation has been underscored by recent reports from the SAPS, highlighting a disturbing trend of extortion aimed at contractors engaged in the site's clearance operations.

These incidents have raised significant concerns and have added a layer of complexity to the already challenging task of ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
