Without assistance, Sudan faces grim fate due to malnutrition: WFP

Date: Apr 28, 2025

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is spiralling, with millions of lives on the line due to the ongoing conflict and its devastating effects on food security.

According to Abraham Abatneh, Head of Programme for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan, 5 million children and breastfeeding mothers are already suffering from severe malnutrition, and without urgent intervention, they face a grim fate.

Abatneh painted a bleak picture, explaining that half of Sudan’s population, some 25 million people, are now experiencing acute hunger. The WFP’s appeal for nearly $800 million to assist 7 million people between May and September remains significantly underfunded, with a concerning $698 million still needed. The shortfall has placed vital food assistance in jeopardy, particularly for the most vulnerable.

The crisis is most severe in northern Darfur, where an estimated half a million people are trapped in besieged areas, reliant on external aid. Despite the difficulties posed by ongoing conflict, the WFP has managed to make some inroads, delivering crucial supplies to regions like Tawila. However, the overall scale of the crisis demands much more.
