Several hundred new arrivals, many of them visibly exhausted and traumatised, reached Chad this week. Authorities warn that the country is already stretched thin, hosting around 1.4 million refugees, including more than 800 000 who have fled Sudan since war broke out nearly two years ago.
The United Nations this week raised the alarm over the pace of arrivals, noting that more than 20,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed into eastern Chad in just the past month. The sharpest increase has been seen in the Wadi Fira Province, where nearly 6 000 people arrived over a two-day period in May. Another 6 000 were registered in Ennedi Est.
Aid workers on the ground say conditions are becoming increasingly difficult as refugee numbers grow. With limited resources and stretched humanitarian services, both host communities and refugees are facing immense pressure.
