South Africans raise concerns over shortage of clean drinking water

Date: Oct 7, 2024

Residents of Carolina in Mpumalanga, South Africa have raised concerns over the shortage of clean drinking water.

The Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality has imposed restrictions following low water levels at the Boesmanspruit Dam.

Some residents claim they haven’t had water for weeks.

“In Carolina, we don’t have water. They don’t bother to tell us when the water will come or even when there’s water in the tap, the water is always dirty. You can’t even drink it. We are suffering too much,” says one resident.

Chief Albert Luthuli Executive Mayor Mbuso Magubane says they are working hard to come up with other ways of sourcing water.

“We are optimistic that going forward as we continue to drill boreholes or focus on the underground water, we will be able at least to reach more than 50% of the demand of water for the residents of Carolina. But we have also taken a resolution as the Council of Chief Albert Luthuli to impose restriction measures. We have six levels. Level two, that’s when we’ll be restricting 40% of our water, which is 40% of the current demand of 5.7 megalitres. Level three is 50%, which means that if we are on level three, the municipality will only be able to release 50% of the demand of the community.”
