SA High Court rules in favour of Basic Education Department over matric results publication

Date: Jan 8, 2025

South African (SA) High Court in Pretoria has dismissed the case between the Information Regulator and the Department of Basic Education, ruling that it is not urgent.

The dispute centred on the publication of the 2024 matric results in various forums, including newspapers. The Information Regulator had previously argued that the department’s decision to publish the results would violate the privacy rights of the learners. However, the court ruled in favour of the department, allowing the matric results to be published as planned.

The ruling paves the way for the 2024 matric results to be made available to the public, despite concerns raised by the Information Regulator over the privacy of the students involved. The department is expected to proceed with its original plan of publishing the results in newspapers and other media outlets.

This decision follows an ongoing debate about balancing public access to educational achievements with the protection of individual privacy rights.
