GNU supports full implementation of BELA Act: SA President

Date: Dec 21, 2024

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the full implementation of the  Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act.

During a signing ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria in September, Ramaphosa announced a three-month delay in the implementation of two contested clauses.

The aim was to allow parties in the government of national unity (GNU) to deliberate on how different views on the two clauses could be accommodated.

Ramaphosa’s decision ends one of the GNU’s most contentious issues.

He says, “The Government of National Unity Clearing House participants agreed that the Act should be fully implemented. This view was endorsed by the leaders of the parties to the GNU in a meeting I held with them. I accordingly advised them that I would proceed to sign a Presidential Proclamation to bring the Basic Education Law Amendment Act, the BELA Act, into operation.”
