African leaders among global voices welcoming Pope Leo XIV

Date: May 9, 2025

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, joining world leaders in welcoming the newly elected pontiff.

Ramaphosa described the occasion as a “profound moment” not only for the Catholic Church but for the broader global community.

Pope Leo XIV, originally from Chicago, is the first American to be elected to the papacy, a milestone that has resonated widely, both politically and spiritually. United States President Donald Trump hailed the election as “a great honour” for his nation, while Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, speaking from the Pope’s adopted homeland, said his rise to the papal office had inspired “hope among those who need it most.”

The election of Pope Leo XIV has stirred optimism among Catholics and non-Catholics alike, with many hopeful that his leadership will usher in a renewed era of compassion and unity.
