Date: Jul 10, 2024

An investigation into the death of a South African National Defence Force (SANDF)member in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently underway.

The member deployed to the DRC under MONUSCO was killed when a hand grenade exploded close to the sleeping quarters in Beni, North Kivu in eastern of the country.

A SANDF Board of Inquiry, in collaboration with the United Nations, will soon be convened to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Head of Communication at the SANDF, Siphiwe Dlamini, says the investigation will determine if there was ammunition near the tent. “This is exactly what we need to find out because it is not normal that such dangerous ammunition next to where people sleep.

“You can have your rifle and something of that nature but such ammunitions normally will be stored in a very specific way so it doesn’t injure or hurt people. those are some of the things that the board of inquiry and investigation will be looking at.”
