Case against SA Deputy President's former VIP Protection Unit members continues

Date: Feb 3, 2025

The case against eight former members of South Africa's (SA) Deputy President Paul Mashatile's VIP Protection unit is set to continue today in the Randburg Magistrates Court in Johannesburg.

The officers were arrested after allegedly being caught on video assaulting civilians on the side of the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023. The accused, who are out on $534 bail each, have since returned to work and face several charges, including assault, malicious damage to property, and pointing of a firearm.

The victims, confirmed to be military trainees, were driving from Potchefstroom to a military base in Pretoria when the alleged assault occurred. The first witness, who was the driver, testified last year about being beaten up, losing consciousness, and being left on the side of the road. The second witness described being dragged out of the vehicle and assaulted.

The lawyer for the accused claimed that the officers had to use "minimum force" to ensure compliance, adding that the occupants of the car were drunk and driving recklessly.

The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the use of excessive force. As the trial continues, the court will hear further testimonies and examine the evidence to determine the outcome of the charges against the former VIP Protection unit members.
