SA Chief Justice Zondo calls for increased capacity at Labour Court

Date: Jul 27, 2024

South Africa's Chief Justice Raymond Zondo highlighted the Labour Court's need for improvement in its judicial performance.

Despite achieving its set target with a 58% performance rate by finalising over 2 000 cases, Justice Zondo pointed out the necessity for more judicial posts to handle the workload effectively.

The Labour Court, which specialises in employment-related disputes, managed to complete 60% of its cases in the 2021/22 financial year.

However, there was an 18% decrease in case enrollments compared to the previous year.

The Chief Justice's remarks came during the presentation of the 2022/23 Annual Judiciary Report at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg.

He emphasised the court's ongoing requests to the executive for additional judges and courtrooms to increase case throughput.

"Without enough judges or courtrooms, there is a limit to what can be achieved," stated Justice Zondo, underscoring the urgent need for resources to enhance the court's functioning.
