This was announced by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy during a media briefing in Pretoria, Gauteng province.
The highest number of fatalities were recorded in the Eastern Cape province, with 28 deaths, followed by KwaZulu-Natal province with 27 fatalities.
“Fatalities were reduced from 307 over the Easter weekend in 2024 to 167 in 2025, which is a 45% decrease,” said MCreecy.
“All provinces recorded decreases in fatalities, except Mpumalanga, where there was a small increase. There were 28 fatalities in Mpumalanga, compared to 22 in 2024.”
