This highlights the group’s determination and expanding operational capabilities in the Sahel region.
JNIM claimed responsibility for a deadly assault on a military base in central Mali on Sunday, which killed over 30 soldiers. The group also launched attacks on a military airstrip and Russian mercenaries in Timbuktu on Monday, triggering heavy gunfire and explosions that have rocked the area since early May.
Political analyst Dr Zoumara Diarra of Mali said that these well-planned strikes indicate a strategic shift in JNIM’s approach. “These attacks are not random. They demonstrate a clear intent to infiltrate and destabilise military forces, especially in key towns and border areas,” she said.
Despite Russian military support to regional forces, JNIM has reportedly killed over 400 soldiers across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger in recent years. Diarra raised concerns about how the jihadists continue to arm themselves heavily despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
The targeting of urban military sites, including Timbuktu airport, forms part of JNIM’s broader strategy to undermine state authority and disrupt security. The militants’ recent seizure of a base near the Burkina Faso border underscores the urgent need for stronger regional cooperation.
Diarra urged Sahelian states to reinforce the joint military force recently established to combat terrorism. “Co-ordination, intelligence sharing and material support are vital if the threat is to be contained,” she added.
Malian authorities say the situation is now under control following the latest clashes, with 13 jihadists reported killed. However, the surge in violence continues to cause alarm among residents in affected areas.
