This comes after the Inwoners Baagi Civic Movement disputed the new Tshwane municipal authorities’ announcement that the Klipgat Wastewater Treatment Works is complete and fully functional.
The movement says the extent of non-compliance in the quality of discharge from wastewater treatment plants is very worrying.
Musetsho says this is a serious problem.
“The most immediate risk is to public health because inadequate treatment and disposal of wastewater can lead to contamination of drinking water sources, spreading diseases such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, and other gastrointestinal illnesses. Secondly, there is environmental damage itself.
Thirdly, there are economic consequences and social impacts, which are quite important because communities suffering from poor wastewater management can experience a decrease in quality of life due to foul odours, unsanitary conditions, and health issues.”
