Media freedom in Zimbabwe continues to be under threat

Date: May 29, 2025

Media freedom in Zimbabwe continues to be under threat as the government seeks to govern both mainstream media and the emerging online content creators.

Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a new media policy in Harare on Wednesday where he warned media practitioners against what he terms misinformation and harmful content.

Mnangagwa's warning is likely to heighten tensions between his government and the media sector who have for years raised concerns about restrictions on press freedom in the country.

"Under my leadership the media will continue to be our cornerstone for promoting unity, peace, social cohesion harmony and the love for our country. Anything besides this, (chibhakera muziso), 'a punch in the eye'."

This was a forceful warning to media practitioners in Zimbabwe by the country's head of state.

Mnangagwa has warned that he will unleash the law and justice system on those who, in his words, infringe on the rights of Zimbabweans.
