Mother sentenced to 18 years for daughter's murder in SA

Date: Jun 30, 2024

In a sombre conclusion to a heart-wrenching case, a 47-year-old woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her young daughter.

South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has expressed its approval of the sentence, emphasizing its commitment to seeking justice for victims of crime.

The tragic incident unfolded in April 2022 in Ballito, just north of Durban, when the woman, overwhelmed by depression, drowned her four-year-old daughter in a bucket of water. In a distressing confession, she revealed to the court her intention to end her own life, feeling unable to leave her daughter behind in this world.

Following her actions, she attempted suicide using sleeping pills. The case has drawn attention to the dire need for mental health support and awareness in the community.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the NPA's regional spokesperson, stated, "The woman was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and she was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the finalisation of this matter. It is our mandate to pursue justice on behalf of the victims of crime," highlighting the gravity of the situation and the NPA's role in the legal process.
