In 1994, Parliament in the country passed the Corruption and Economic Crime Act.
It facilitated the establishment of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime.
The move was in response to several corruption scandals involving senior government officials.
The scandals caused public outrage and threatened to harm the country’s reputation as an African model of good governance.
Boko spoke to SABC News following his inauguration as the country’s sixth president.
“The legal framework in this country is that whoever engages in corruption, the issue then becomes are we able to detect. Whoever engages in corruption must face consequences,” says Boko.
