Zimbabwean President reiterates intention to step down in 2028

Date: Feb 19, 2025

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reiterated that he intends to step down at the end of his constitutional term in 2028.

This despite growing calls from some ZANU-PF party members for him to extend his tenure until 2030.

Mnangagwa told journalists in Harare that he will not violate the country’s constitution and go beyond his stipulated term in office.

During the 2024 ZANU PF annual conference in Bulawayo, the party made a resolution to have Mnangagwa serve beyond his constitutionally permissible two terms.

Mnangagwa however declined the offer through the party’s Secretary for Legal Affairs Patrick Chinamasa.
