SA points to Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique over surge in illegal migration

Date: Apr 28, 2025

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has flagged Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Mozambique as the main sources of illegal migration into South Africa (SA), Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato announced this Monday.

Addressing journalists at a media briefing in Pretoria, Masiapato reflected on the agency’s operations over the Easter holiday, a traditionally busy period for cross-border movement. He outlined both the gains made in tightening border security and the persistent challenges facing the authority.

Despite ramped-up enforcement efforts, he noted that the same countries continued to dominate the list of offenders.  “Even in this 2025 Easter period, a consistent pattern of top three nationalities which continue to undermine our immigration laws remains the Zimbabweans at 2 019, followed by Basotho’s at 1 921 and then followed by Mozambicans at 1 143, and the remainder of 1 170 were shared amongst the Swati’s and other nationalities,” said Masiapato.
