The group, consisting of men aged between 18 and 44, was found in a white Ford Ranger Double Cab bakkie that had been intercepted by the Provincial Anti-Smuggling Team.
The vehicle had been travelling from the Beitbridge border post in Musina, known for illegal crossings, with the intention of reaching Johannesburg in Gauteng. According to police Spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the individuals could not provide any valid documentation proving their legal status in SA.
“These suspects were arrested for breaching the Immigration Act. They failed to show any legitimate papers to explain their presence in the country,” Thakeng explained. “The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot to avoid arrest, and we are actively pursuing him.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over illegal immigration and human smuggling, particularly along the Beitbridge border. Authorities are continuing their efforts to curb these illegal activities and ensure tighter control over the nation’s borders.
The 20 suspects now face charges related to immigration violations, and investigations into the driver’s whereabouts are underway. Police have pledged to increase their efforts in tackling human trafficking and smuggling, which have become pressing issues in the region.
