Mozambique opposition leader calls for peace ahead of more protests

Date: Jan 3, 2025

Mozambique opposition party PODEMOS’ leader, Venancio Mondlane, has called for peace and unity ahead of a new round of protests against the outcome of the presidential elections.

This follows the Mozambican Constitutional Council’s announcement that FRELIMO’s Daniel Chapo won 65% of the vote, a drop from the 71% initially reported by the electoral commission in late October last year.

Mondlane has also declared that he plans to install himself as President on January 15, despite being in a self-imposed exile.

Whilst on a Facebook livestream, Mondlane called for solidarity among Mozambicans amid protests that have left 278 people dead since October.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has rejected mediation efforts on the political impasse, saying that the country is independent and will resolve the issue internally.

Meanwhile, other opposition parties are expected to brief the media on Monday on the way forward.
