Date: Jul 14, 2024

The Chief Executive Officer of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Dr Nkuli Boikhutso says more should be done to protect and address children’s issues in South Africa.

She was speaking during a fun walk event dedicated to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy of celebrating his birthday with children.

The children embarked on a 5 km walk from Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital to Johannesburg Zoo on Saturday morning.

This is the third annual children’s celebration walk, which is a build-up to the 18th July activities. Dr Nkuli Boikhutso explains.

“We definitely can do more to protest and take care of our children. We continue to have high levels of inequality in our society, which will affect children. Levels of poverty, healthcare access for children, so more definitely needs to be done, I don’t think we are doing enough as a country.”

Meanwhile, a group of walkers from a non-profit organisation, Lowveld Walkers, have embarked on a 12-day cross-country walk for unity in commemoration of Mandela Month have completed their journey in Mbombela.

About 67 walkers took part on the 500 kilometer walk which began at the Lebombo border gate on the first of July. They crossed to Mozambique and eSwatini before making their way back into South Africa.
