SAHRC to discuss illegal immigration with SADC partners

Date: Jul 4, 2025

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has announced it will soon engage with neighbouring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to tackle the challenges posed by illegal immigration.

This development follows rising concerns about migrants from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and other neighbouring states.

In recent months, groups such as Operation Dudula and March and March have been actively preventing undocumented migrants from accessing healthcare services in Johannesburg and Durban, sparking heated debates around migration and human rights.

Aseza Gungubele, the SAHRC Commissioner overseeing migration, human settlements and climate justice, explained the aims of the forthcoming dialogue.

“The main focus will be on border management,” Gungubele said. “We plan to invite High Commissioners and ambassadors from SADC countries based here in SA so we can collectively explore how to manage migration more effectively.”

She stressed that neighbouring countries share responsibility for their citizens living in SA. “It’s important that nationals from these countries understand their duties and responsibilities while residing here.”
