SA blind community concerned over Copyright Amendment Bill

Date: Jan 5, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) blind community has highlighted its concern over the provisions of the Copyright Amendment Bill.

It says specific provisions criminalise the conversion of reading materials to accessible formats without the copyright holder’s permission. The formats include braille or large print.

SA joined the international community Saturday to mark World Braille Day.

Blind SA President Christo De Klerk says, “For us, an awareness about braille is important because braille is essential to us. There are some myths floating around, that with the development of technology, braille is going to become redundant- but I think that is just not true.”

De Klerk says, “Technology advances for everybody, for sighted people, as well as for blind people and ink has not become redundant for sighted people so there’s no reason why braille would become redundant. And we are now celebrating 200- years of Braille.”
