I'm ready to lead electoral reform process in Mozambique: President-elect

Date: Dec 24, 2024

Mozambican President-elect Daniel Chapo says he is ready to lead electoral reform process in Maputo.

He says it has become clear over the last few days that the neighbouring country needs reforms.

Mozambique was plunged into a political crisis after the Constitutional Council validated the 9th of October election results. But opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has rejected the results saying they were rigged.

“One, the Constitutional Council proclaims Daniel Francisco Chapo elected president of the republic of Mozambique. Two it validates the results of the legislative elections of October 9th, 2024,” said Judge Lucia Ribeiro of the Mozambican Constitutional Council.

Mozambique is on the cusp of a political crisis. Fresh protests have erupted after the Constitutional Council confirmed Daniel Chapo’s victory with over 65 percent and followed by Venancio Mondlane with 24 percent.

“Mozambicans, before I express my gratitude for the trust that the Mozambican people have placed in me, allow me, on my own behalf and on behalf of my family, to express my deepest sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones during this period of violent demonstrations. I would like to convey my sentiments and condolences to the bereaved families,” says Chapo

Some observers say the election was not free and fair. The post-election period has seen the biggest protests against FRELIMO in Mozambique’s history. In South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC), which enjoys close ties with FRELIMO, has welcomed the proclamation.

The United States says those responsible for the violation of human rights and excessive use of force by security forces, must be held accountable.
